What is it about?

Does the ruling class still rule in the British corporate world? On the one hand, business elites in Britain have globalized and come from different countries. On the other, elites with the traditional symbols of British ruling class remain more central in deeper relationships.

Why is it important?

Britain's business elites have a dual loyalty to globalization and the traditional symbols of the British ruling class. The influence of the British ruling class however is more subtle than in the past because it is only visible on a deeper relational level.

Perspectives

I enjoyed bringing insights from cultural sociology to the study of corporate networks. Elites collect influential symbols that are important to their positions in board rooms. It will be interesting to see whether British elites rely more heavily on the traditional symbols of the ruling class or remain globalized after the vote to leave the European Union.
