This editorial introduces two papers published in the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry. Both papers are concerned with the age of onset of mental disorders.

Why is it important?

One of these studies finds a six year delay between the onset of bipolar disorder and the initiation of treatment. Six years of unmanaged bipolar disorder, especially in a young person in their early 20s could make a big negative difference in their life. Earlier identification and treatment could prevent a lot of problems.
