What is it about?
We performed intranets ulnar injections of either standard or liposomal bupivacaine in the porcine stifle (knee) joints and assessed articular chondrocyte viability 1 week later.

Why is it important?
Liposomal bupivacaine has shown decreased toxic effects on chondrocytes, in vitro but no prior study has assessed in vivo effects.
Perspectives
Liposomal bupivacaine caused significant less chondrocyte death compared with standard bupivacaine and was comparable to control groups, suggesting it is safe for intra-articular injection.
