What is it about?

This work looked at the detailed anatomy of the medial patellar ligaments and how to assess their surgical restoration on x-rays.

Why is it important?

This study is one of the first to evaluate in detail all of the major medial patellofemoral joint stabilizers. It found that the medial patellofemoral ligament, medial patellotibial ligament and the medial patellomeniscal ligament are consistently identified and that further biomechanical studies should be pursued to understand their function better.

Perspectives

This study was a multicenter study performed concurrently with Dr. Arendt's team at the University of Minnesota. We feel that by working collaboratively on this project, a broad sense of the importance of these kneecap structures was achieved.
