What is it about?
This study looked at the overlap between an ACL attachment and the anterior horn lateral meniscus root attachment using scanning electron microscopy.

Why is it important?
: The study is very important because it showed that the ACL and the anterior horn of the lateral meniscus overlap by about 40%. This is important because if one places an ACL reconstruction tunnel on the tibia too lateral, it could effectively take out the anterior root attachment of the lateral meniscus. This could lead to lateral meniscus extrusion and the development of iatrogenic arthritis of the lateral compartment.
Perspectives
This study was one of the first to definitely demonstrate that the ACL overlaps with the anterior horn of the lateral meniscus. This is a new finding and future studies should be able to determine if we are causing arthritis by destabilizing the anterior horn of the lateral meniscus during an ACL reconstruction surgery. We anticipate that this will be a hot topic going forward in the future.
