Why is it important?
This article found that there are 5 different types of meniscus root tears: Type 1 is a partial tear. Type 2, which is the most common, is a complete radial root tear. Type 3 is a root tear with a bucket-handle tear. Type 4 is an oblique root tear close to the attachment. Type 5 is a bony avulsion of the root attachment. It is important to obtain a classification system for meniscus root tears so that different types of repairs can be studies and compared between studies.
Perspectives
This classification system provides an overview of the different types of meniscus root tears and will assist in the ability for surgeons to communicate between studies as to the type of root tears and repairs presented.
