What is it about?

This article provides an up-to-date overview of the diagnosis and treatment of meniscus root tears. Meniscus root tears have been called the "silent epidemic" of the knee. They are now recognized as being a frequent source of osteoarthritis of the knee when they are not treated with repairs.

Why is it important?

This Current Concepts article was one of the first to highlight current findings on meniscus root tears. Meniscus root tears have only been recognized by our profession over the last 5-7 years. They have been found to be a "silent epidemic" because of the fact that they have been present for so long and when not treated have sometimes led to spontaneous osteonecrosis of the knee and almost always the inevitable development of osteoarthritis. It has been recognized that when they are treated that meniscal root repairs can slow down the rate of progression of arthritis significantly.

Perspectives

This highly cited article was one of the first to provide a distinct overview of meniscus root anatomy, diagnosis of injury, and surgical treatment.
