What is it about?
Every human beings constructs defences in childhood. Two primary defences 'Rebel' and 'Sweetheart' (terms coined in a sister article in the same journal by Emily Ruppert) are described and explored in relation to the spirit that lies at the core of each of us. The reader is given guidance as to how to let go of the defences and live more in harmony with their true nature

Why is it important?
There seems to be a growing dissatisfaction in our Western culture. For example relative prosperity but high suicide rates. Along with this comes an increased interest in mindfulness and ancient Eastern philosophies. The article offers a guide to living mindfully and to a different sort of happiness that comes from the expression of spirit and our true nature.
Perspectives
The original article (Ruppert TAJ 2017) has been a huge inspiration to me to let go of my defences, face my deepest fears and to live more authentically in the realm of the spirit. I hope to have conveyed this in my article with some assistance from the poetry of Rumi, Rilke and T.S.Eliot amongst others.
