Why is it important?

Design of buried structures requires input of the mechanical properties of soils. For site-specific soils, the testing of soil mechanical properties is cost-prohibitive. In design, the backfill soil in which the structure is embedded is often specified as a given type of soil with a given level of compaction effort. This paper provides approximate soil properties for backfill soils, which can be used in the finite element software PLAXIS 3D.
