What is it about?

While it is widely known that curing important for concrete, tests to assess the effectiveness of curing could be improved. This paper uses neutron radiography as a rapid method to measure the degree of hydration as a function of distance from the surface.

Why is it important?

This paper shows a new way to measure curing that is based on the extent of bound water (degree of hydration) with high spatial resolution. This provides substantial benefits compared to methods that base curing effectiveness on mass or strength measurements of a bulk system.

Perspectives

I hope others will find this as a useful approach to evaluate different curing technologies in a systematic manner. This could enable curing to be optimized for concrete. In doing so this would an impact on service life and sustainability.
