What is it about?

The paper reports on a study of a university business research center in which discipline librarians surveyed members to discover their current data practices. They then analyzed the responses to determine what the drivers were for the various choices made by the researchers. This has led to the formulation of targeted strategies to encourage researchers to abandon undesirable practices.

Why is it important?

The project has applied a behavioral framework as a better way of understanding what motivates researchers' behaviors. It is important to determine whether a person performs an action because of their attitude. motivation, (lack of) capability, or opportunity, i.e. external factors. Understanding which is the principal driver allows for a more targeted response.

Perspectives

Appreciating the power of a behavioral framework has had unexpected consequences for some of us in the Griffith University Library. It is now more apparent that sometimes when we set a goal, such as "increase attendance of students at information literacy sessions", our actual starting goal is to modify the behavior of the stakeholders who can influence students to attend.

Attitude is the biggest challenge to overcome when trying to influence good data management practices. Interviewing researchers using a framework can help understand attitude, behaviour, capability and opportunity and assist in identifying intervention strategies that are aligned to the individual.
