What is it about?

The results present a series of effective interventions led by occupational therapists with older adults in the community. It identified that occupational therapy was cost-effective when fostering social participation in older adults. However, the review pointed to different challenges when integrating these interventions into current practice, leading to restricted basic roles in community occupational therapy.

Why is it important?

This review is important to help clinicians, decision makers and community members work together in implementing new initiatives to promote older adults' health. Facing population aging and rising chronic diseases, increasing older adults' social participation is essential to foster health and active aging. These results point to the potential contribution of occupational therapists and show different actions that must be undertaken.

Perspectives

This is one of the papers I am the most proud of. It is the product of a community-based participatory research conducted with occupational therapists, older adults and caregivers, community members and healthcare managers. This collaboration allowed me to meet a diversity of stakeholders and brought me to be aware that they were all working toward the same aim: improving older adults' social participation and quality of life. The findings are relevant to these stakeholders and can be used internationally to improve occupational therapists' practice and healthcare services globally.
