What is it about?

Adolescence is an important stage of life. During adolescence children begin to develop their independence in many life areas and enable in greater decision making and problem-solving about their everyday activities. Children are experiencing significant changes in their development physically, cognitively, socially, and emotionally. This paper examines the impact of difficulties related to dyspraxia upon independence across various life areas. The paper investigates what health services adolescents with dyspraxia may need to support them.

Why is it important?

This paper is unique because it addresses a national data set, that completed a standardised questionnaire and measure. Our findings show that adolescents with dyspraxia continue to experience specific difficulties that can impact upon life areas such as; education, vocational training, social and family. Furthermore, adolescents with dyspraxia identify a need access for specific health services such as, occupational therapy and psychology.

Perspectives

This publication was very important to me as a clinician. I work with adolescents with dyspraxia and their families on a daily basis. I recognize the struggles they experience, as well as the challenges accessing health services once a child transitions to adolescence. The paucity of knowledge regarding effective evidence based interventions for adolescents with dyspraxia motivated me to investigate this clinical population.
