What is it about?

Our data suggest evolving trends in place of death with fewer deaths at home and in the general wards of acute hospital but more deaths in palliative care units and residential care. Very few patients over 85 years and even fewer of those whose primary cause of death was dementia died in their own home.

Why is it important?

We should continue to monitor trends in place of death, while health and social services consider how best to meet the future needs and preferences of an increasingly old and frail UK population.
