What is it about?

Rehabilitation after spinal surgery is important because it helps to transmit an effect of local improvement of body structures into better functioning. We analyzed how the efficacy and safety of rehabilitation after cervical disc surgery are endorsed by scientific evidence.

Why is it important?

This is probably the first systematic approach to the effectiveness, harms, and ineffectiveness of rehabilitation for people who have had cervical disk surgery for local neck pain or upper limb dysfunction due to a nerve root involvement in cervical disc disease. We found that the number and quality of randomized controlled studies is too low to drive any conclusion.

Perspectives

Lack of evidenced knowledge about rehabilitation after cervical disc surgery precludes providing recommendations for clinical practice. There is a high demand for well-designed studies. Most important are studies on the efficacy of multiprofessional programs of care, since in many patients undergoing the surgery the risk of complex disability is high.
