What is it about?

Critics to a publication that determined the PNF-based approach as being structural oriented. Clearly pointing out that the Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF)- Concept is a comprehencive rehabilitation approach focusing on functional task setting and motor learning effects.

Why is it important?

There seems to be a regular misunderstanding of the comprehensive nature of the PNF-concept. Only components of the PNF-concept are often part of research projects and publications. To understand and use the PNF-concept reseqarchers need to be aware that testing for efficiency of components is totaly different from how the PNF-concept is used in real time patient treatment.

Perspectives

The perspective of our commentary is only small, more information on the comprehensive nature of the PNF-concept can be found in: Fred Smedes, Marianne Heidmann, Carsten Schäfer, Nicola Fischer & Agnieszka Stępień (2016): The proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitationconcept; the state of the evidence, a narrative review, Physical Therapy Reviews, DOI: 10.1080/10833196.2016.1216764
