Why is it important?

This article has demonstrated the relationships between oxygenator exhaust and blood concentrations of isoflurane and the BIS score during cardiopulmonary bypass when administrating isoflurane into the sweep gas supply to oxygenator. We concluded that, in patients undergoing heart surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass, oxygenator exhaust concentrations were significantly associated with arterial concentrations of isoflurane, neither had any association with the BIS scores, whereas body temperature has moderate positive correlation.

Perspectives

BIS may not be a true reflection on the depth of anaesthesia when patients undergoing heart surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass. In an analogue to the end tidal concentration of anaesthetic in general anaesthesia, the oxygenator exhaust isoflurane concentration may be a useful indicator to be utilised along with BIS score in assessing the depth of anaesthesia during cardiopulmonary bypass. Our study revealed that there was a correlation between the oxygenator exhaust isoflurane concentrations and its arterial isoflurane concentrations.
