What is it about?

This article presents a tool that measures the quality of urban parks in relation to the needs of children and teenagers. Our tool uses secondary data that cities collect and share with the public. Cities, counties, and nonprofit organizations can use this tool to assess how park quality varies within certain jurisdictions.

Why is it important?

Our tool to measure park quality does not require lengthy and expensive field audits. Instead, it relies on secondary GIS data collected by public agencies. The instrument we developed was validated by experts in park design and planning.

Perspectives

I believe this tool is particularly promising because open GIS data is increasingly more available.
