What is it about?

The main departure idea to guide the reading of this paper is that planners are looking for ways to make plans more effective. Participation in very many ways are a substantial part of that effort. On the other hand most tactical urbanism initiatives are unsanctioned and sometimes unrecognised by planners. This paper discusses the contributions that planners can expect from recent tactical urbanism initiatives, most of the in the US.

Why is it important?

The findings suggest that there is a potential to be explored, depending from the interaction between planning and bottom-up initiatives such as those produced by tactical urbanism.

Perspectives

This paper is very much an attempt to look at (unsanctioned) bottom-up initiatives and planning initiatives as part of the same process.
