What is it about?

Over more than a decade in the literature of gifted education in Hong Kong, the mention of gifted school has been seldom brought up except for G.T. College (GTC), which is Hong Kong’s first college for the gifted, pioneering gifted education in Hong Kong since 1990s. Some renowned scholars in the past have depicted GTC in brief regarding its admission policy but not much has been said on its special programmes. The purpose of the present article focuses on giving an extensive introduction of the ways GTC nurtures students’ talents. The first part of the paper reviews the historical developments of gifted education in Hong Kong. Next, GTC’s historical stages are explored. This is followed by an illuminating introduction of GTC’s innovative curriculum - Talent Development Programmes and Youth Development Programmes.

Why is it important?

This article provides educators and researchers in the field of gifted education a deeper understanding of the unique, special programmes offered by G.T. College, the first gifted college in Hong Kong, on how it trains its students to become future leaders of society, fostering the important attributes of its school motto - love, creativity and task commitment. The paper is also essential as it makes a contribution to the literature of gifted education (Hong Kong). So far, not much has been said on the gifted education programmes provided by special schools in Hong Kong from the current literature. Some renowned scholars in the field of gifted education in Hong Kong such as Chan (2000) only mentioned G.T. School’s admission policy of identifying gifted & talented students based on Gardner’s (1983) theory of multiple intelligences. The paper aims to fill this research gap.
