What is it about?

This was an examination of strict and expressive conductors on the ratings of the identical ensemble performances by college student not in music. There was a difference among conductors. More importantly, while identical music was used in all cases, the performance was rated differently, depending on conductor expressivity.

Why is it important?

We need to understand that music performances are seen differently depending on whether you can see a conductor or not. In other words, seeing a videotape is a different experience than only hearing the work. Indeed, we would argue that they are two different experiences.

Perspectives

This is one in a series of studies that continues to have similar results. Given that the effect size ranged from 0.121 to 0.450, we must consider in what situation participants are as they will affect the assessment of the performance. Just as listening to auditors behind a screen is different from seeing some so is hearing a piece versus seeing it performed. Conductors do matter in a number of ways.
