What is it about?
A bioabsorbable plate consisting of poly-L-lactide and hydroxyapatite (SuperFIXSORB®) has superior osteoconductive properties, bonds bone, and promotes bone healing. Furthermore, it maintains strength equal to or greater than living bone for >6 months and is absorbed gradually. Our new technique of fixing a rib fracture with a U-shaped bioabsorbable plate enabled stronger fixation easily. Therefore, this technique can be useful for fixing rib fractures.

Why is it important?
The U-shaped bioabsorbable plate was able to securely fix the fracture, by covering the fracture almost circumferentially. Fixation for fractures is often reported with the plate as a splint; however, we consider it essential to increase the contact area between the plate and bone for strong fixation. More extensive fracture coverage with a bioabsorbable plate increases the strength against flexing and twisting.
