What is it about?

Speech problems and holes in the palate (fistulas) are common after cleft palate repair. The Furlow type of cleft palate repair reduces the chances of speech problems with perhaps more fistulas in wide clefts. Many cleft surgeons have not employed the Furlow method on wide clefts. This study has demonstrated an acceptable rate of fistula formation when extending the speech benefits of the Furlow method to nearly all clefts.

Perspectives

The burden of care can be high on the cleft patient and family. Any changes that potentially achieve better outcomes with fewer procedures are worthy of consideration.
