How do different stepfamily relationships influence American Indian depression? This paper examines how perceived child-biological parent, child-stepparent, and child-stepsibling relationships influence depression in emerging adulthood in an American Indian sample.

Why is it important?

American Indians have higher rates of divorce, remarriage, and depression than other racial groups. Our findings suggest that perceived child-biological parent and child-stepsibling closeness can be associated with lessened depression among American Indians.
