What is it about?

The study found that there was a significant relationship between paternal hostility and paternal monitoring with adolescents’ anxiety. These relationships are influenced by family income. Father's consistent discipline and monitoring behavior reduced adolescent anxiety in high-income families. There is a possibility that fathers’ parenting behaviors and adolescent anxiety could be different when family’s income is considered.

Why is it important?

Understanding the context in which the father-adolescent relationship is embedded is important when working with fathers and adolescents.

Perspectives

Information on fathering in an Asian context particularly in Malaysia, is scarce. This paper refine our knowledge on the role of fathers in a collectivist culture. Fathers are expected to be household leaders and ensure economic stability for the family. Fathers with good financial standing tend to associate with their children better than those with lesser income. Even in collectivist culture, social economic contexts shape the way a father's behave towards their children.
