What is it about?

The article contributes to the emerging field of network failure with an original explorative case study about the underperforming network between the Venice Film Festival and the local hospitality system, used to theorize about the role of individual agency and micro-dynamics in network evolution.

Why is it important?

Network studies have been focused on network benefits and advantages for a very long time, and scant attention has been dedicated to their problems or dysfunctionalities. The consequence of this focus is twofold: on the one side, we have only a partial understanding of network dynamics and performance; on the other side, empirical studies on networks can be affected by an important measurement bias. Theorizing and producing empirical studies on networks underperformance and failure is a priority for network research.

Perspectives

The article offers a deep review of network studies in the field of failure, and help highlighting two important weaknesses in the existing literature: a scarce consideration of individual agency, and the risk of focusing on static social structures. The empirical analysis provides very interesting insights into an original case study of an underperforming network in the beautiful city of Venice, useful not only from the theoretical point of view, but also from the methodological one.
