What is it about?

Six focus groups of African-American adults over the age of 50 were held in churches in southeastern Michigan. Participants discussed how they defined depression, the conditions under which they would seek help, and what they expect from formal care services.

Why is it important?

If we wish to provide community-based services that people will use, it is important to listen to the voices of older adults as they tell us what is important to them. Participants shared some concrete suggestions that may be useful to agencies as they plan for culturally appropriate outreach.
