What is it about?

How can we evaluate the effects of capitalism on media and culture? This paper argues for the importance of paying attention to effects on people's well-being, or flourishing, and explores the potential of the approaches known as 'moral economy' and 'capabilities'

Why is it important?

This article extends critical understanding of relations between capitalism, media and culture by drawing on thinking that has rarely been applied in this context before, including philosophical ethics.

Perspectives

In this piece, I try to develop concepts of quality of life, flourishing and the value of culture. I explored these issues more empirically in previous work such as Creative Labour (2010, with Sarah Baker) and Why Music Matters (2013) but here I pay particular attention to the concept of capitalism.
