Why is it important?

Ineffective programs show little variation in their ineffectiveness. In contrast, effective programs generally show a range of effects. Documenting the stability of impact across implementation settings may establish the likely applicability of results or reasons effectiveness varies. Evidence-based program adopters need information beyond just effectiveness to know if an evidence-based program is a practical and appropriate fit for their setting. By documenting how the same program is implemented in different settings on different samples - and how those differences affect impact estimates - researchers can provide program adopters with the information they need for evidence-informed adoption of effective programs

Perspectives

Trust in science and adoption of evidence-based practices remains a significant challenge. Adopting methods which embrace the expected variability of study results and which provides potential adopters full disclosure of likely or potential barriers and facilitators of both implementation and effectiveness may improve trust in evidence and increase the adoption of evidence-based practices and policies.
