What is it about?

This work is presented a quantitative assessment to measure the impact of modified anisotropic diffusion–based enhancement method of Mittal et al. in computer-aided classification of focal liver lesions. The results reveal that the application of enhancement method on clinically acquired ultrasound image may effectively improve the confidence of clinicians/radiologists in computer-aided diagnostic solutions to detect and classify focal liver lesions.

Why is it important?

A rigorous quantitative analysis is performed in this work that support and suggest the implementation of modified anisotropic diffusion–based enhancement method of Mittal et al. in computer aided diagnosis of focal liver lesions and may significantly improve the detection and classification of cancerous and non-cancerous tumors.

Perspectives

This publication is useful for (i) medical community by clearly demonstrating the enhancement of ultrasound images by image processing method (i.e. modified anisotropic diffusion–based enhancement method of Mittal et al.), which is a noninvasive way, may improve the diagnostic performances in the diagnosis of focal liver leisons, (ii) researchers in bio-medical engineering area to implement it in computer-aided diagnostic system for the aid of medical practitioners and may further improvement the method to provide a automated solution.
