In four experiments, we demonstrated - for the first time - that altering perceptions of genetic relatedness between Jews and Palestinians can make the difference between violence and co-existence.

Why is it important?
Several genocides have used rhetoric about genetic differences to instigate violence (e.g. Rwandan Genocide, Bosnian Genocide), people are increasingly seeking personal DNA testing services (e.g. 23 and Me) to determine their unique ethnic lineages, and the media frequently reports on the degree of genetic overlap between various ethnic groups with a history of conflict. However, until now, the effects of altering ethnic groups' perceptions of their genetic relatedness was unknown.
