What is it about?

How many times does the New Testament refer to Satan? Or, if we want to construct a theology of Satan from the New Testament, what is our data set? This study seeks to answer these questions by identifying all New Testament references to Satan. Some instances are obvious, such as where the text refers to 'the Devil' or 'the Satan', but others are not so obvious. For instance, is 'the ruler of this world' (John 12:31) Satan? What about 'the destroyer' (1 Cor. 10:10)? We look at all of these uncertain cases and arrive at a list of 137 references to Satan in the New Testament, which can be used for further research or theological study.

Why is it important?

As far as the authors know this is the first attempt to identify every New Testament reference to Satan including careful, critical analysis of all uncertain cases. Hence it provides a useful resource for further study of the New Testament writers' ideas about Satan.
