What is it about?

This essay summarizes the protracted legal battles between the leadership of Laurel Heights, an upscale San Francisco neighborhood, and the University of California, San Francisco over the creation of a medical research facility to be located in this district. The conflict, marred by confusion and distrust, exposed an unexpected level of fear regarding chemical emissions nd radioactive contamination.

Why is it important?

The clash demonstrates the importance for academic medical centers to engage with the residents and leadership of surrounding neighborhoods with regard to operations and future expansion plans, forming partnerships and alliances that make the medical enterprise an authentic community resource.

Perspectives

As noted in the title, this publication is a personal memoir. I was the chair of the History of Health Sciences Department at UCSF during the years 1985-2000 and part of the Dean's leadership council. My essay is based on newspaper reports and and oral histories .
