Why is it important?

As much as we think things have changed, in fact, the data show the opposite. Here we see that stereotyped emotive behavior manifests itself in who gets hired: Men are police officers and women are elementary school teachers.

Perspectives

I find it useful to hold a magnifying glass to taken-for-granted assumptions about jobs and who can perform them best. The look reveals that a conflation of gender and emotional labor results in stereotyped hiring practices.
