The article addresses the issue of uneven participation in the national army recruitment from different regions/geography. The recruitment in the contemporary period was studied in the state of Gujarat, India.

Why is it important?

The a study used a field survey to measure the propensity of young school students to enlist in the army or the willingness of their guardians like the father to allow him to enlist.

Perspectives

Having access to archival data related to the soldiers enrolled in the princely armies in the state of Gujarat it became quite clear that indigenous Gujaratis were not inclined to join the state forces in colonial times. The author got anxious to follow the trend of enlistment in the current times. It was revealed that the state quota for army recruits from Gujarat in 2002-07 was not fully subscribed by the state. This led to exploring the likely drivers of this poor propensity in Gujarat, India
