This paper re-theorizes and clarifies the relationships between features of interpersonal communication situations and participants' goals.

Why is it important?

Reasonably apparent features of a situation give rise to primary goals, which stimulate subjective elements of the situation, which in turn give rise to secondary goals.

Perspectives

This resolves the two main views of situation/goals: that situations stimulate goals, and that situations are comprised of the goals.
