What is it about?
Relationships are often the only avenue open to address the care needs of both older and younger generations in economically deprived environments. This study explored how empathy manifested in the care experiences of older people in relation to middle adolescents. Empathy is proposed as an essential quality that can benefit care in any relationship.

Why is it important?
significance of this research, three aspects will be highlighted: (1) the exponential growth of older populations globally and in South Africa, which places excessive pressure on health-care resources, families, and younger community members; (2) threats to the value of communal interrelatedness and of reciprocal intergenerational care; and (3) the importance of empathy in relational care experiences between different generational members, particularly in low-resourced environments.
Perspectives
This article is innovative in terms of its focus on empathy in intergenerational relations and how indications of this were obtained Mmogo-method, a projective visual data collection method.
