Why is it important?

Women and men differ systematically in the type of sentence structures they prefer, in their intonation patterns used with main and subordinate clauses and in their use of subordinate clauses when expressing high or low commitment to what they are saying.

Perspectives

Gender differences in syntax are largely due to status differences. Certain sentence types favoured by women come to be frequent in men's speech too, when men are placed in a lower-status setting, i.e. as applicants in application interviews.
