What is it about?
We evaluated the irradiance of locally fabricated phototherapy devices (LFPDs) in Jos. The contribution of several parameters/characteristics of these devices was also quantified. This was in order to have a mathematical estimation of how much irradiance would be expected from these devices after simple modifications.

Why is it important?
Our study is particularly helpful to heath care providers in resource constraints communities due to the high cost of intensive phototherapy devices. We found out that simple modifications in the design of LFPDs significantly improved irradiance, hence treatment of neonatal jaundice.
Perspectives
I was excited doing this study because it gave us an opportunity to measure irradiance of the LFPDs used in several hospitals. I also saw enthusiasm in the managements of the hospitals towards effecting the recommendations form our study. So, I know that care of neonates with jaunidce in Jos has improved.
