What is it about?

This article is about the public opinion on land acquisition by the government. Here I have identified the different sets of public opinion which evolved along with land acquisition in West Bengal. It shows that the generalised macro-level hypotheses which justified development through industrialisation may not work without a well-planned resettlement and rehabilitation policy for the affected peasantry.

Why is it important?

The article revealed that generating public consciousness does not only involve empirical and theoretical research on land acquisition but also a dissection of the public opinion around it. Because, although land acquisition is a governmental job but it has its supporters among the public which also include experts and the elected representatives of the people. The importance of this article lies here since shows how land grab gets moral justification in the society.

Perspectives

I believe that the findings of my research would help to bring the ground realities of land acquisition before the public. For example, people who supported land acquisition hardly had any knowledge how it endangers household level food security and local self-government. Public consciousness around land acquisition can be generated only by knowing its nature and type and how it varies.
