Why is it important?

Kott's writing has had a profound influence on the work of theatre practitioners and literary critics the world over. Kott's literary criticism is in every sense Marxist, and much of his early career was given over to helping establish communism in Poland. During the war he was a member of the Moscow-backed resistance, and later helped edit the important socialist-realist magazine Kuźnica and even joined the Party.

Perspectives

Kott's fascinating literary-political biography not only provides an interesting insight into the peculiarly Polish interface between literature and politics, but also a detailed and personal glimpse into the ambitions and failure of rewizjonizm.
