In the light of the recently-discovered letter from Cézanne to Zola a year after the publication of L'Oeuvre, the parting of the ways needs to be explored in other perspectives: the consequences of Zola and Cézanne being on opposite sides in the Dreyfus Affair; and the efforts of art-dealers to disassociate painter and writer in the context of the painter's inaugural retrospective in 1895.
