This article is based on a comparative study of 9- to 11-year-old children’s place use and preferences in six low-income historic Istanbul neighbourhoods with varying degrees of redevelopment.

Why is it important?
While most research on children’s places has been conducted in the Global North, ‘ordinary’ children’s place experiences in the Global South are remarkably under researched. This article focused on an empirical study conducted in a city of the Global South, Istanbul. It explored how the character of children’s places, and therefore children’s place use and preferences, change from less to more redeveloped neighbourhoods in a historic and rapidly transforming city, Istanbul.
