What is it about?

Many cities are investing in new subway and light rail systems, in the hopes of encouraging nearby economic development. This paper examines whether new rail stations in California have led to growth in retail activity in surrounding neighborhoods.

Why is it important?

We find that, on average, retail employment near stations did not increase, but that outcomes varied considerably across stations within and across cities. It is important to remember that new transit infrastructure will not have the same impact in all locations; understanding local context can help target investments to areas with the largest potential impact.
