What is it about?

The paper analyses the development of suburbia in post-communist Romania via self-building/developing.

Why is it important?

For four decades of communism Romanian people were not allowed to build houses in cities. Once they were allowed, rich and poor, they engaged in the hard work of self-developing their homes. Some did incrementally and with their 'sweat and blood'; others used remittances and plenty of informal resources.

Perspectives

Doing this research, I was fascinated with the individual meanings of a single-family, self-build home: it is an image of self, of dreams made true.
