What is it about?
For five decades, the Swiss theologian Karl Barth, though married to Nelly Barth, was in love with Charlotte von Kirschbaum who a few years after they had met began working as Barth's secretary and moved into his household. The article reconstructs their relationship and the problems this caused for the marriage through the letters from 1925 to 1935 between Barth and von Kirschbaum which have been published in 2008.

Why is it important?
There had been many speculations and irritations about Karl Barth's relationship to Charlotte von Kirschbaum. Since the publication of the letters between Karl and Charlotte in German in 2008, they should end. To my knowledge the article is the first complete interpretation of these letters in English.
Perspectives
The article tries to reconstruct the relation between these three individuals without judging them.
