What is it about?

A discussion of Joel Osteen's theology, and how those who hope to criticize its weaknesses need to take into consideration why it is so compelling and what fragments of truth it actually offers. Blaise Pascal and Soren Kierkegaard offer insights into the nature of theological criticism and the priority of dialectic over dismissal.

Why is it important?

This essay is useful not only for people interested in the prosperity gospel, but especially for people who want to know how to challenge others' religious commitments in a way that is both honest and critical. This doesn't mean we shouldn't challenge false beliefs, but it means that doing so must be an act of vulnerability and compassion.
