What is it about?

The policy of the Government of India to build a string of hydro-power projects in its northeastern region has led to widespread protests in the region. These protests are based on the apprehension that this new ‘development’ initiative of the government would spell disaster to the river ecosystem and the livelihood and cultural heritage of the people of the region, most of whom are very small, indigenous groups .

Why is it important?

The essay highlights the cultural, ecological and geological issues of the communities in the northeastern region of India which are put under serious threat my dam building in the region. While development of the region is important, the above issues noted in the essay have to be given adequate attention to avert serious problems later on in this geo-morphologically and politically sensitive region.

Perspectives

I intend to bring the problems of dam building in the northeastern region of India and the protests against this to bring this to the notice of the larger audience. The issues in the region are often ignored or misrepresented. I will be happy if the article creates some awareness about the region in general and the problem of dam building in particular.
