What is it about?

This article compares the growing body of literature on Islamic work ethic with the widely studied 'Protestant work ethic' elaborated by Max Weber. I use the largest worldwide survey data available from the World Values Survey (2005-2014) to test empirically the claim that Muslims have a consistently stronger work ethic than present-day Protestants. That claim was not supported by the data.

Why is it important?

This paper provides a consistent comparative review of both Islamic and Protestant work ethics. Moreover, it puts the theoretical claim to empirical test using the widest data available to date and suitable methods of analysis (multilevel ordinal regression).

Perspectives

Islamic ethic has recently gained more attention in the literature. This is my take on its systematic study and review, which I hope will contribute to the comprehensive study of religious ethics in general.
