What is it about?
The Letters of John contravene the message of the Roman Empire by proclaiming a greater Savior, salvation, and fellowship. This article shows how the voice of John and other apostles contrast with the voice of Greek and Roman rhetoricians in the empire.

Why is it important?
We live at a time when commitment to ideology and politics has eclipsed commitment to truth and integrity. The Letters of John provide a model of resistance to this tragic trend in modern society.
Perspectives
I have deeply appreciated the opportunity to write and publish this article. The Gospel and Letters of John are increasingly recognized for their weight and importance in biblical and early Christian studies. However, the writings of John are still largely neglected in studies of the encounter between empire and early Christianity. I am happy to make this contribution to an area of study that deserves more attention.
